The MLB Draft: Is it really meant for TV?

June 13, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Well it happened, Beckham and Longoria are officially playing on the same field for the first time in their wondrous careers. Yea I know, not funny, nor original. But really, what does this all mean? Is there something I’m missing out on?

The NBA and NFL Draft:

Year after year I continually watch the NFL and NBA Draft. I find them entertaining. I find them intriguing. I often wait and wonder as to who is going to be the biggest bust of the NFL Draft. I ponder what the New York Knicks were doing when they drafted Channing Frye, Michael Sweetney, Frank Williams, Donnell Harvey… and soon Michael Sweetney’s twin brother Roy Hibbert.

In the NBA, each year is the same story, who is going to land the next NBA ready European (Dirk Nowitzki), or win the lottery and gamble on a High School Phenom (Lebron James).

The NFL, quite the same. All purpose players like Reggie Bush and Darren McFadden get all the hype, but it’s players like Marques Colston whom turn out to be the biggest diamonds in the rough.

So much glitz and glam is spewed all over the internet, the newspapers, local and national cable stations, everything. As a sports fan, you absolutely can’t avoid it and once it’s on, you can’t stop watching it. In fact, this past year while siting in Pizza Orgasmica (“We never fake it”) I enjoyed pitcher after pitcher of their good ol’ home brew Amber Ale, while waiting to see whom my beloved Pittsburgh Steelers would land with the first pick.

There is such a hype for the NFL draft. The Protrade community sat around and watched as these players matured through the ranks. In fact, I remember watching epic battles of Brian Griese, Drew Henson and Tom Brady, as they fought to be the lead distributor on a classic Wolverines football team.

In basketball, we watched as Greg Oden and Kevin Durant went blow for blow against their opposition in order to be the Number 1 Pick.

With all this said, where does “America’s Pastime fit”?

The Demise of the MLB Draft

3 things I got out of this years draft (which I couldn’t drag myself to watch).

1. Three Beckhams were drafted… and they aren’t related; Tim, Gordon and Jeremy.

- In all honesty, I don’t know a lick about either of them, aside from the fact that Tim plays with Evan Longoria.

2. The Giants are about to pay $12 million dollars a year for a rookie (Buster Posey), whom probably won’t even play for a couple of years.

3. The MOST important issues. ITS BORING . The whole first round can be watched here!

It’s so boring that I actually said, “Yes sweetie, I don’t mind if you put on the Denise Richards show. I would love to hear about her fake life for the next hour or so!” (which by the way, is more annoying than Khloe Kardashian)… yeaaaa….

It’s funny to hear that Baseball is sooooooo boring to watch on TV from International students at my University. But for once in my life, we actually have something to agree on.

So I ask you, fantasy world! What is your take on this years draft, or any MLB draft in general? Does it live up to all your expectations? Or did you not even waste a minute of your time?

It is now time for your input!

Thanks for reading!
